worlds largest and most active service club organization. |
Lionism has been in existence since Melvin
Jones created it in 1917. In it’s early years it was influenced by Helen
Keller. This led to its primary objective, to help the blind and to save
sight.
The Falls Church club was chartered in 1940.
For 65 years it’s members have followed it’s motto—WE SERVE

A HISTORY OF THE FALLS CHURCH LIONS CLUB |
|
In 1940, a small group of young
Falls Church business and professional people debated about what sort of
formal organization they could bring into being to help fulfill the social
aspects of their lives. They finally decided to form a club which would not
only take care of their social needs but would also enable them, and future
Lions, to render much needed services to their own community
On May 28, 1940, sponsored by
the Arlington Host Lions Club, the Falls Church Lions Club was officially
chartered with a complement of 20 members. We now have a total of 54
members.
|
 |
Our first President was Burns N. Gibson, Sr., (1940-1941). Mr. Gibson was
the proprietor of a combined motel, restaurant and service station, located
in Falls Church, Va. The first meetings for the Club were held in a room
that Mr. Gibson provided at his establishment. Through the years regular
meetings have been held locally in quarters of other club organizations and
various restaurant facilities. Currently our regular meetings are held at
La Cote'Dor Cafe on Lee Highway in East Falls Church, Va., on the second and
fourth Tuesdays of each month |
|
As
stated above, we are banded together to render much needed services to our
own community and to help those who are less able to help themselves.
Typical is the assistance we have provided to the Falls Church Child
Development Center (formerly the Cerebral Palsy Center). Our club
actively participated in the formation and establishment of the Center some
years ago, and continues to support it today. During the last 64 years
we have donated countless man hours and over $822,400 to organizations and
groups. You will notice from the list that we have adhered to the principal
areas in which Lions Clubs help others, such as sight and hearing
conservation and help for the blind and hearing impaired. In addition, we
have contributed to other projects which relate directly to our own
community and which are quite varied.
Where
has the money come from for our Charity Fund? It has come from the efforts
of all our Club members who worked together to obtain it. Through the years
the "White Cane Day" sales have been, and continue to be, one established
fund raising technique. In the early days of our Club, funds were also
obtained through the sale of Christmas trees, light bulbs, brooms, auctions,
bazaars, teen canteens, etc. In later years we have relied instead upon
Bingo games, raffles, Florida citrus sales and Golf Tournaments.
Monies obtained through these projects are expended
100% on charities.

ABOUT LIONS
INTERNATIONAL |
|
OBJECTS:
|
|
TO CREATE and foster a spirit of understanding among
the peoples of the world.
|
|
TO PROMOTE
the principles of good government and good citizenship.
|
|
TO TAKE
an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of
the community. |
|
TO UNITE
the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual
understanding. |
|
TO PROVIDE a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest;
provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall
not be debated by club members. |
WE SERVE
|
|
LIONS CODE OF ETHICS |
|
TO SHOW my faith in the
worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I
may merit a reputation for quality of service. |
|
TO SEEK success and to demand
all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit
or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair
advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part.
|
|
TO REMEMBER
that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down
another's; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself.
|
|
WHENEVER
a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action
towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself. |
|
TO HOLD
friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship
exists not on account of the service performed by one another, but that
true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in
which it is given. |
|
ALWAYS
to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state, and
my community, as to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act, and
deed. To give them freely of my time, labor and means.
|
|
TO AID others by giving my
sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to
the needy |
|
TO
BE CAREFUL
with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not
destroy |
