ADOPT A PLATOON
In April the Falls Church
Lions Club board approved a new service project adopt a platoon. The club
would collect items and then send them to the troops. We got a name and
address of a unit stationed in Iraq from the Adopt a Platoon origination.
While helping others the club will have a service project we can do at our
dinner meeting.
The Adopt a Platoon
Soldier Support Effort™ founded in 1998 is a nonprofit 501C-3 organization
managed nationwide by volunteer mothers to ensure that deployed United
States Service members in all branches of the military are not forgotten by
providing needed mail support and to promote patriotism in our schools and
communities. To provide a better deployment quality of life, lift morale,
and assist military families, the AAP created projects that meet the need of
military requests, established special projects for holidays, and assigns
individual morale lifting mail support to service members of all branches of
the U.S. military serving their Nation around the world.

Our platoon has 25
soldiers and they take care of helicopters. The unit has 3 female members.
Lion Brian is our point of contact with the unit. Lion Wally has agreed to
help with the packing and mailing of the items. We have sent one package to
date. The package had sunscreen, lip balm, insect repellent and some candy.
The units point of contact is SFC Donald We are using his first name at this
time for privacy and security. We have not had contact with our platoon yet.
We will be corresponding by e-mail.
For our June packages we
should send general items. Here are some items mentioned in the soldier
delivery letter. They would appreciate Insect repellent w/Deet, lip balm and

powder, medicated body powder, ladies hygiene products, skin lotions, leave

newspapers. The Adopt a Platoon originations suggest that we do not send
items that will melt it is ok to send these items in the winter months. For
