Lion Katie introduced Mike Curtain, resident of Falls Church and prior
owner of the Broad Street Grill, and now a manager of DC Central
Kitchen. Mike gave a program about DC Central Kitchen – it’s founding in
1988 by Robert Egger and it’s success in working with restaurants,
hotels, markets etc. to obtain food to prepare 4500 meals daily to send
to shelters, churches, and social service agencies to support their
programs in feeding the homeless and hungry. (See http://www.dccentralkitchen.org/
for the full description). Mike cited DC Kitchen’s particular success
in providing training to ex-convicts in food service industry jobs – a
very cost effective alternative to incarceration - $8,000 for training a
person to obtain a decent job verses the $32,000 per year to imprison an
individual. DC Kitchen has been successful in moving 50-60 ex-convicts
into employment annually vs approximately 40 that would return to prison
for subsequent offenses |

Barry Buschow introduced speaker Kathy Kleiman, computer scientist and
attorney, who is working on a documentary about the women involved in he
ENIAC project during the 1940’s. During WWII, the world's first software
developers were recruited by the Army to program the quirky ENIAC, the
first all-electronic programmable computer. These six pioneers invented
many of the concepts of programming, and remarkably, in a high-tech
version of Rosie the Riveter, they were all WOMEN. Kathy Kleiman, then
a young programmer herself, discovered the ENIAC Programmers in the
mid-1980s. "Their story inspired me and helped me to stay involved in
computing at a time when few women were in my computer science
classes,"notes Kleiman. For the full story see:
