KL Steve reported on a very special event – the presentation of a Progressive Melvin Jones Award to Lion Bob Porter at his home. KL Steve, along with Lions Lennie Goldman and Barry Buschow participated in this event to express appreciation on behalf of all club members to Lion Bob for his many years of service to our club and Lionism.

KL Steve reviewed the need for support at our Lions table for Saturday Farmers Market. Lion Lennie reported Lions news items and Tail Twister Lion Stan Levin found it necessary to fine most everyone present for not wearing an official Lions pin.

Lion Katie introduced Mike Curtain, resident of Falls Church and prior owner of the Broad Street Grill, and now a manager of DC Central Kitchen. Mike gave a program about DC Central Kitchen – it’s founding in 1988 by Robert Egger and it’s success in working with restaurants, hotels, markets etc. to obtain food to prepare 4500 meals daily to send to shelters, churches, and social service agencies to support their programs in feeding the homeless and hungry. (See http://www.dccentralkitchen.org/ for the full description).  Mike cited DC Kitchen’s particular success in providing training to ex-convicts in food service industry jobs – a very cost effective alternative to incarceration - $8,000 for training a person to obtain a decent job verses the $32,000 per year to imprison an individual.  DC Kitchen has been successful in moving 50-60 ex-convicts into employment annually vs approximately 40 that would return to prison for subsequent offenses

KL Steve announced the upcoming board meeting on 7/15 at Lion Wally Zampella’s home at 7:30pm. Lion Barry asked for member support of Team #3 at the Eyeglass Recycling Center on 7/16 from 7-9pm.

The 50/50 drawing was won by Lion Phil Loar earning him $12 and giving Lion Phil the opportunity to find the Joker in the Deck to win the big prize. Unfortunately Lion Phil picked the 9 of diamonds so the Joker Draw pot will continue to accumulate for another day

16 Lions, two guests: Mark Massey and Tom Leary and our speaker,     – Kathryn Kleiman, Esq.,. Producer /Historian of Refrigerator Ladies: The True Pioneers of Computer Programming The pledge was led by Lion Willard Edwards while Lion Sue challenged members vocal talents by leading the group in singing the Peter Pan song I Won’t Grow Up. Lion Joe Ward delivered the invocation. Lion Wally Zampella introduced his guest and fellow Rutgers graduate – Tom Leary, the coach of a Kiwanis Little League team – The Lions. Tom presented a team jersey to the club.

Lion Raymond Campet preceded his review of the dinner menu with an important announcement -  he and wife Lynne are grandparents of a baby boy for the 2nd time!!

Lion Lennie Goldman provided Lion News and announced the 8/24 D@$A Visitation Kickoff at Manassas Park West Lions Club. PDG Clark Erickson indicated that he and Lions Chuck Mandelbaum and Willard were leaving in several days for the annual LAMP medical mission in Wise County.

Lion Barry Buschow introduced speaker Kathy Kleiman, computer scientist and attorney, who is working on a documentary about the women involved in he ENIAC project during the 1940’s. During WWII, the world's first software developers were recruited by the Army to program the quirky ENIAC, the first all-electronic programmable computer. These six pioneers invented many of the concepts of programming, and remarkably, in a high-tech version of Rosie the Riveter, they were all WOMEN.  Kathy Kleiman, then a young programmer herself, discovered the ENIAC Programmers in the mid-1980s. "Their story inspired me and helped me to stay involved in computing at a time when few women were in my computer science classes,"notes Kleiman.  For the full story see: www.eniacprogrammers.org .

The 50/50 drawing was won by Lion Don Farrow and his attempt at the now whopping $195 Joker Draw resulted in the 4 of diamonds – sorry Lion Don.  The pot is expanding and the deck is shrinking, so don’t miss your opportunity to win this prize – ATTEND EVERY MEETING!!!
